A number isn’t an interpretation

600 spores/m³ might be significant—or completely unremarkable. Concentration alone rarely gives you the answer. Learn how fungal type, diversity, outdoor conditions, and environmental context change what those numbers actually mean.

"Indoor < Outdoor” doesn’t mean normal

One of the most common shortcuts in the industry is assuming an indoor sample is acceptable simply because the total count is lower than outdoors. The types of fungi present—and the pattern they create—can matter just as much as the total.


Not all mold carries the same significance

Finding Cladosporium is not the same as finding Stachybotrys. Different fungi have different ecologies, moisture requirements, likely sources, and potential exposure concerns. Knowing what was found can be just as important as knowing how much was found.


The report can only tell you what the sample captured

A spore trap represents a small volume of air collected during a brief moment in time. Airflow, activity, sampling location, collection volume, and laboratory methods can all influence the result. Learn what conclusions the data can support—and where its limitations begin.

Over the last decade, Brantley has built his career around understanding the data behind spore trap sampling—not simply collecting samples.

His training includes specialized microscopy education through the McCrone Research Institute and Ochsner Medical Center, focused on the microscopic identification of fungal spores and pollen. He has also had the opportunity to train under his mentor, Dr. John Shane, PhD Mycologist, further developing his understanding of fungal identification, ecology, and interpretation.
